romans 9:6-7 - a spirit thing
"Don't suppose for a moment, though, that God's Word has malfunctioned in some way or other. The problem goes back a long way. From the outset, not all Israelites of the flesh were Israelites of the spirit. It wasn't Abraham's sperm that gave identity here, but God's promise." [romans 9:6-7]
i think that many people who claim to be christian need to examine their hearts. while i would never expect perfection of anyone, growth is a key factor. when we decided to walk with christ, we left behind our old life and old ways - we took on the "burden" of love, grace, peace, forgiveness and acceptance. we looked beyond the prejudice of this world, and accepted the love and way of christ. we realized that it is not a "blood thing" but a "spirit thing."

What about the people who have grown up in a nasty church environment? Turning away from 'old ways' is so confusing when people who should know better are the role models for those old ways. This is where it is so important to connect with the wider body of Christ - to discover our own weak spots. Paul must have agonised over this. Other people who had followed Jesus were giving him a hard time for mixing with the 'heathen'. I imagine members of his own family were criticising him for his approach. He had to discover a new family that wasn't based on the old family connections.
